HMC Nomenclature Guidelines
The Guideline for Assigning Titles to USP Herbal Medicines Compendium Monographs (Guideline) was jointly developed by Dietary Supplement and Herbal Medicines Expert Committee (DSHM EC) and the Nomenclature Safety and Labeling Expert Committee (NSL EC). The purpose of this Guideline is to set forth a system that USP uses to assign titles to monographs for herbal medicine ingredients that are published in the HMC. The Guideline discusses general principles followed when assigning titles to monographs and provides specific examples illustrating how such titles are constructed. A glossary is included to provide clarification for terminologies specific to herbal medicine ingredients and processed forms whose definitions are not readily available elsewhere or that have been defined differently in other sources. This Guideline supersedes any previous guideline issued by USP on assigning titles to monographs in HMC and is subject to revision at the discretion of USP.
